Flash Fiction Flourish - Week 5: Combination #FlashFiction

This weeks prompts are:
and 'Combination'

The Last Stand
The apocalypse started because of mankind's constant journey to explore and experiment; soon the machines became sentient and revolted, enslaving everyone.

"Are you sure this is the right thing to do?" asked Lucy.

"We are a powerful combination, with your courage and my will to fight; we will survive anywhere," Carl said, watching as armed refugees opened the gate. "Stay calm."

Crippled by a sudden barrage of beeps and screeches deep within themselves; Carl and Lucy fell to their knees, hands clenched in unison.

The on-lookers took aim, not sure what to make of their actions.

"Who are you?" the leader asked, gun drawn.

"Malfunction!" said the duo, still on bended knee holding hands.

"We got chip-heads,boys." announced the leader, moving in closer.

"Open Fire!"

Bullets slammed into Carl and Lucy, puncturing flesh; revealing detailed circuitry underneath. The a.i. faded; terminated by humanity.

Flash Fiction Flourish is the brain child of Rosalind Smith-Nazilli. Each Saturday a prompt is posted and everyone is welcome to participate. The only rules are that the flash fiction no greater than 150 words and the word prompt must be included in the piece. The picture is there to inspire you as well.
