Five Sentence Fiction – Perseverance

 Lessons of the Dark Art
"No, you must sever the limb with one strike; take the cleaver and watch."

The mentor passes his protegé another human cadaver limb for testing.

"Raise the cleaver above your head, aim, and strike; power will come with age but precision is taught."

"Start with the hand, one strike should remove it cleanly; speed and accuracy are crucial in the field, without practice you will get caught on your first night out."

The student raises the blade above his head, aims and strikes; missing the mark and chopping off three fingers instead of the hand as instructed; his master retrieves another arm.
